When spring arrives, humidity climbs quickly, and the wood absorbs that moisture and expands. The edges of the door swell first because they have the most exposed surface area. Solid wood doors and engineered panels both react, though the effect is most visible on the latch side and the bottom rail. It is important to tell the difference between temporary seasonal swelling and a true alignment problem. Seasonal swelling appears in spring and eases as the air dries later in the year. A genuine misalignment, caused by loose hinges, a dropped frame, or house settling, stays consistent regardless of the season. Mixing up the two leads to the wrong repair.

This is why planing a swollen door too soon is a common mistake. If you shave down a door during a humid spring, it may fit perfectly for a few weeks, then leave oversized gaps once humidity drops and the wood contracts again. Planing should only be done when a door sticks year-round, not as a quick fix for a seasonal change.

Most spring door problems can be solved without removing material. Adjusting and tightening hinges, repositioning the strike plate, and controlling indoor humidity often restore smooth operation on their own.
